Investigating strategies to improve attendance at screening visits in a randomized trial

چکیده
Background A common method of recruiting for randomized trials is to send letters to potentially eligible patients inviting them to a screening appointment. In 3 consecutive UK studies the proportion attending from those invited fell from 49% [1] in 1994-1997 and 42%[2] in 1998-2001 to 13% at the beginning of an ongoing study in 2007. Procedures were similar in the 3 trials except that in 2007 the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) was enclosed with the invitation letter. In order to understand whether the contents and/or style of invitation would explain the declining trend, 2 separate randomized comparisons were undertaken during the recruitment for the ongoing study.

BACKGROUND Screening may reduce morbidity and mortality associated with melanoma, although in the absence of randomized-controlled trials, this remains unproven. BACKGROUND Following male circumcision for HIV prevention, a high proportion of men fail to return for their scheduled seven-day post-operative visit. We evaluated the effect of short message service (SMS) text messages on attendance at this important visit. METHODOLOGY We enrolled 1200 participants >18 years old in a two-arm, parallel, randomized controlled trial at 12 sites in Nyanza provin...

Many recommended aspects of prenatal ...

BACKGROUND Interventions are needed to improve viral suppression rates among persons with HIV and substance use. A 3-arm randomized multi-site study (Metsch et al. in JAMA 316:156-70, 2016) was conducted to evaluate the effect on HIV outcomes of usual care referral to HIV and substance use services (N = 253) versus patient navigation delivered alone (PN: N = 266) or together with contingency ma...
